Phonics Readiness

Our method of combining phonics with basal instruction helps children learn more quickly and feel confident in their own ability to add to their knowledge as they sound words out on their own. We find the faster a child learns to read, the more they find reading to be an easy and enjoyable process, which makes the process of studying new material for the rest of their lives much easier.

My daughter went through a 10-15 mins short placement assessment which included reading from a list of words including sight words and sounds of 2 letter words like "dr", "ch", "or". After this, the instructor will recommend the class that she will be attending which is the advanced phonics class. She will then explain how the class will be taught e.g. it will be a mixture of songs, story telling, new sounds be taught every week, worksheets to be done in class which can be brought home weekly for revision. The teacher will expect that her students be able to read those words taught in the class in the following lesson so its like recapping of last week work with the class. Currently her class has 6 of them with 1 teacher only. Not too bad except for the location which is rather inconvenient for us at the moment.

I believe that phonics foundation is very important for my child as it will help her with her reading and spelling especially when K2 there's spelling every week in her school. So I decided to choose Jan and Elly at Seletar Hills. The environment is cozy and comfortable, conducive for learning. First the centre manager gave us an overview of their program e.g. the different levels and their teaching methods and what to expect from our child after completing each level. Next she conducts an assessment so that she can determine at which level my girl should enroll in. In the end, she was enrolled to the Phonics Readiness class. Assessment on whether she will be able to promote to the next level will be done after every 3 lessons. The best part is they offer 1 to 1 sessions should your child needs improvement in any areas. However, this will cost like $80 for a 45 mins session. There will be some simple homeworks to do based on what they have learnt on that day. Most importantly is that she really enjoys going to the class every week.
